The practice model
Tapiki is a technology practice led by Brian Dote, with a small, stable bench of partners. Brian provides the technical leadership on every engagement and is accountable for it, from the first assessment through launch and the years after.
Everyone who touches your work is in Hawaiʻi or is a vetted US partner.
Partners
Design comes from Hawaiʻi agencies we have worked with for years. When an engagement needs more capacity, we bring in a small set of US-based partners we have worked with for nearly 20 years. Our main design partner is iQ 360, and our main development partner is TechRiver. Each engagement names the people on it.
Ownership
You own the code and the accounts from day one.
We build on standard, documented stacks that a software engineer on your team or hired by you can maintain. No proprietary frameworks, and no lock-in.
Security
Every account that touches a client system has multi-factor authentication turned on, and access is granted to named people, never through shared logins. When an engagement ends, that access is removed.
Secrets such as API keys and database credentials live in the hosting platform’s environment store and in an encrypted password manager, never in code, email, or chat. Dependencies and plugins are updated on a schedule, with a backup taken before each WordPress update and a check of the site after it.
Hosting runs on Vercel, Cloudflare, or WP Engine, as each project requires, with TLS on every site and automated backups. If something goes wrong, Brian is the point of contact, and you hear from him directly.
Tapiki has worked under HIPAA, and built the system the City and County of Honolulu used to manage its employees’ COVID-19 exposure reports.
Accessibility
WCAG 2.2 AA is the baseline for everything we build, and we hold our own work, including this site, to it. When we audit a public agency, we test against the standard it is held to.
Privacy
No tracking on our site: no analytics, no pixels, no profiling. On yours, we collect only the data the work needs, and keep it only as long as it is needed.

In delivery, AI makes us faster at the same quality, with human review of the work.
In products, we select the best LLM for your specific needs.
Continuity
Some of our clients have been with us for more than a decade.
Every system is documented as it is built, and the documentation lives in your repository and your accounts, not ours. A second developer from our partner bench works alongside Brian on every engagement, with access to your systems and knowledge of how they work.
Each engagement has a handover plan, so your work continues if Brian is unavailable. It lists every account and who holds admin access, how the system is deployed and restored, and each vendor and its renewal date.
If you move the work in-house or to another firm, we help with the transition.
